Grade 7

The syllabus focused on recycling. We began by upcycling packaging into some useful. The project became too diverse, and the group became difficult to manage. This was the most problematic group I worked with. A combination of uncooperative personalities and large group numbers.

We progressed to learning crochet and developing yarn from plastic bags. The project was to make a cell phone cover. The learners became enthusiastic about learning a skill, and excited at seeing their object progress and develop.
All the students were able to crochet by the end of the project.

I quickly learned that to keep order with the amount of projects produced, the number of classes and learners, folders for each learner made things flow. The folder making became a project in itself, and with this group we made fold out paper bags with crochet handles. This involved making templates, measuring and folding, accuracy and working with paper tape [the tape that needs to be wet, a delicate skill!]. The bags were then decorated. Not all learners got to that stage.

Some of the completed cell phone covers, showing a range of competence.
